Ju – volunteer window dresser

Ju heard about Shared Space from one of our managers and it sounded different to other charity shops. She wanted to find out more and soon started volunteering. She keeps telling us that Shared Space is different.

Location: Shared Space, Westcliff
Experience: Had worked in other charity shops
Hobby: Volunteer scout leader. Walking and singing but not necessarily together.
Working Days: Two shifts a week

I met a Shared Space manager and he asked me if I wanted to get involved. I’ve worked in lots of charity shops before but the way he described it felt different and I wanted to find out more.

    First impressions of volunteering?

I soon found myself doing a couple of shifts a week. Now I’ve been involved for over a year and Shared Space and the people who serve here are part of my life.

    Why did you volunteer?

I love it. I love the idea of helping the local community and being part of it.

What do you do on an average shift?

I get involved in all areas and every week I create a new window display which is a way to express my creative side. Each one has a seasonal feel or a theme.

What is your favourite thing about volunteering?

At Shared Space you feel more involved and connected to where the money goes. I like the way they do it and that it’s groups of volunteers who award the Boost Fund Grants which each shop gives out. That is different and empowering – I’ve been involved in other places before and the managers decide or the money goes off to head office to be allocated.

I suggested that one of the Boost Fund Grants was given to to the 1st Westcliff Sea Scouts who I also volunteer with. We needed camping lamps and Shared Space quickly made a grant of £100 to buy them.

What difference has volunteering made to you?

It cheers me up. I like to be busy and it gives me a good thing to do and a chance to mother the other volunteers. We have a sense of achievement together.
