In the early days of Shared Space, volunteers were empowered to award grants to good local causes on an ad hoc basis.

As the shop is now starting to make more money, the Boost Fund is launched as a better way to give away larger and more frequent grants. It is decided that the volunteers themselves will decide who each month’s grant is awarded to.

The first two Boost Fund grants are:

  • to John an ex-rough sleeper, buying him window cleaning equipment so he can start to earn a living. John insists on cleaning the shop windows to say ‘Thank you!’
  • to sponsor Kerry a Shared Space volunteer, who is walking in the Southend Colourthon to raise money for sufferers of Crohn’s disease.
