Ian – volunteer ebay manager

Ian was sent down to us by Job Centre to do a placement but he loved it and stayed on afterwards.

Location: Shared Space, Westcliff
Hobby: Volunteering and ebay!
Working Days: Various

I was sent from the Job Centre on a ten week work placement and as I have a bad back I need to sit down so they asked me to help with ebay. I was welcomed and soon settled in.

    First impressions of volunteering?

I had never even been in a charity shop before – it was an eye opener! I never realised that people would donate such good quality items. Wow!

    Why did you volunteer?

When I had finished my ten week work placement I felt really at home and I wanted to keep going so I became a regular volunteer and then became the volunteer manager of the ebay store.

What do you do on an average shift in ebay?

The Shared Space shops constantly send us donations to sell. These are higher value and specialist things. The ebay team research the values on ebay, photographs and lists them and then they are stored with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of other items which are on sale at any one time. We need to be pretty organised so we can locate an item as soon as it sells, so we can pack it up and send it out to the customer. We’re proud of our excellent ratings as a seller on ebay.

Considering when we started now we’re sometimes listing up to a thousand items on ebay at once – we love the progress we are making in raising money for local good causes.

What is your favourite thing about volunteering?

I like doing ebay as we are helping local people who are much worse off than myself. That’s why I volunteer.

What difference has volunteering made to you?

Volunteering with Shared Space means I’m not sat in my flat talking to the four walls and watching day time TV – it would have driven me mad by now! Instead I am volunteering with a great bunch of people.

Ian is often heard saying, “Damn! Another thing sold. We’ve just wrapped up all the post!”
